The Panvel-Karjat Suburban Railway Corridor, a key initiative under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-III), is making significant progress towards completion. Executed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), the project aims to enhance connectivity between Panvel and Karjat, serving as a critical addition to the suburban railway network in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
As of October, 67% of the Rs 27.82 billion project has been completed. Land acquisition has been successfully finalized, including 56.82 hectares of private land and 4.4 hectares of government land. Stage-I forest clearance permits have been obtained, allowing work to progress in forested areas, while Stage-II clearance is nearing approval.
Key milestones include 2 million cubic metres of earth filling, breakthroughs in all three tunnels with over 3,100 metres of underground excavation completed, and ongoing lining work. Of the 47 planned bridges, 29 minor and six major bridges have been completed, along with four road overbridges (ROBs). Significant advancements have also been made on critical structures at Mohape and Kirawali.
The Panvel-Karjat corridor is poised to become a vital link, boosting connectivity and supporting the growing transportation needs of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
