In response to the increasing frequency of bridge collapses linked to extreme weather, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has mandated the use of high-tensile stainless steel for bridge construction on national highways near coastal areas. This directive aims to enhance the durability of bridges exposed to severe marine conditions and combat the impact of climate change.
The new regulation applies to all ongoing and future bridge projects in coastal regions and requires that all state and central road construction agencies incorporate this material into their contracts immediately. This policy shift addresses previously inconsistent enforcement of material standards, which has exacerbated infrastructure vulnerabilities.
The ministry’s order, effective immediately, stipulates the integration of these specifications into Schedule D of construction contracts, which details technical standards for highway projects. This measure is part of a broader effort to strengthen infrastructure resilience against climate-induced challenges.
