The Sigra Sports Complex, located in the heart of Varanasi, spans over 1,50,000 sq ft and is built with state-of-the-art technology. Designed to host national and international sporting events, the complex features academies promoting sports and athletes nationwide. Facilities include courts for badminton, squash, table tennis, judo, karate, martial arts, wrestling, taekwondo, and boxing. Additionally, it boasts a 2,000 seat spectator gallery, a warm-up pool, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a gym, a cafe, and a lounge.

The complex, constructed entirely using steel structures, employs advanced technologies such as the deck slab system and modular insulated wall frames. Jindal Steel and Power, known as ‘The Steel of India,’ supplied 700 MT of high-strength structural steel for this project. MHPL promoted E350 Grade Steel in Parallel Flange Sections, resulting in approximately 20 per cent savings in steel usage.

The redevelopment of the Sigra Stadium is a part of the Varanasi Smart City project, costing Rs 289.78 crore. This modern multi-sports indoor complex enhances the city’s sports facilities. The first phase’s Operations and Maintenance tender will be completed by the end of June, with the remaining civil works for Phases 2 and 3 finishing by July.

Besides the main sports facilities, the complex includes a banquet hall, a sports library, and an on-site sewage treatment plant that uses treated water for toilet flushing and irrigation, promoting environmental conservation. The complex’s design aligns with sustainability goals, evidenced by its GRIHA rating, and it includes accessibility features for athletes of all abilities.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the new Sigra Stadium aims to transform Varanasi into a prominent sports hub, encouraging local talent and providing world-class facilities for training and competitions. The development is expected to boost sports tourism and economic growth in the area, fostering a vibrant sports culture.

The modernised Sigra Stadium will also play a crucial role in hosting national and international sports events, putting Varanasi on the global sports map. This will not only provide local athletes with greater exposure but also attract investments and infrastructure improvements in the region. The integration of cutting-edge sports technology and amenities meets international standards, positioning the stadium as a premier destination for sports excellence in India.
