The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has granted a $200 million loan to support the expansion of metro rail corridors and improve transport connectivity in Nagpur, India. This significant investment is part of the Nagpur Metro Urban Mobility Project, which aims to enhance the city’s public transportation infrastructure.

The project will facilitate the extension of four key metro rail corridors: from Automotive Square to Kanhan, Prajapati Nagar to Transport Nagar, Khapri to Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation ESR, and Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna. In total, the project will construct 43.8 kilometers of elevated metro rail lines and establish 32 modern stations equipped with state-of-the-art safety and security technologies.

ADB’s funding will assist the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) in integrating metro stations with other city transport services, including buses, e-rickshaws, e-scooters, and bicycles. This integration will improve last-mile connectivity, promote non-motorized transportation, and enhance access to Nagpur’s outskirts.

Additionally, the project will focus on enhancing Maha Metro’s capabilities by developing a 5-year institutional action plan. This plan will include strategies for gender equality and social inclusion, improve the organization’s digital project management platform, and provide training for metro planning and management. The initiative also aims to create job opportunities and support entrepreneurship among women and disadvantaged groups through skills training, internships, and apprenticeships.

ADB’s support underscores its commitment to fostering sustainable, inclusive, and resilient urban development in Asia and the Pacific. By addressing transport challenges and boosting local economic growth, this project is expected to significantly enhance Nagpur’s urban mobility and overall quality of life.
