Urban infrastructure in Odisha is set for a significant boost as Chief Minister Mohan Majhi announced a capital outlay of Rs 581.95 billion aimed at enhancing the productivity and efficiency of infrastructure facilities. This budget includes Rs 10 billion for the first phase of the Bhubaneswar Metro project, previously earmarked by the BJD government in its interim budget announced in February. The total estimated cost of the metro project is Rs 62.56 billion.

Additionally, Rs 6.06 billion has been allocated under the Unnati scheme to develop more smart cities across the state, with a focus on digital infrastructure. The scheme also seeks to strengthen urban resilience to climate change and other challenges, promoting sustainable development for future generations.

The government is also prioritizing the completion of the pending Capital Region Ring Road Project and the state’s coastal highway project. Majhi noted that assistance from the Centre will be crucial for the successful completion of these projects. He highlighted that the completion of these initiatives is expected to reduce traffic congestion in urban centers and foster the creation of new industrial clusters, which will lead to significant development and job creation.
