The recently completed infrastructure upgrade at Tiruchi International Airport marks a significant milestone, enhancing not only passenger experience but also energy efficiency and capacity. Playing a pivotal role in this transformation was Egis, a global leader renowned for its expertise in consulting, construction engineering, and transportation. As the airport’s design and project management consultant, Egis spearheaded the development of the airport and its supporting infrastructure.
The crowning achievement of this upgrade is the new integrated passenger terminal building, a sprawling structure spanning an impressive 75,000 square metres. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to cater to 4.5 million passengers annually and has received a prestigious four-star sustainability certification from the Green Certification for Integrated Habitat Assessment.
One of the most striking features of the terminal is its roof, which boasts a distinctive parametric curve inspired by the iconic “gopuram” architecture synonymous with the region. This unique design element is complemented by ornamental zinc-titanium cladding, which not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also serves as a functional roof shelter.
The interior of the terminal is a testament to thoughtful design, with artwork and decor in the lounges drawing inspiration from the rich architectural heritage of nearby temples. A multicoloured artificial ceiling adds a touch of vibrancy, while the flooring designs, reminiscent of traditional kolam patterns, create a welcoming atmosphere for passengers.
The completion of the integrated passenger terminal building was a momentous occasion, marked by its inauguration in January by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This achievement underscores Egis’s commitment to delivering exceptional quality and innovation in the aviation infrastructure sector.
