India’s inaugural underwater Metro railway, linking a densely populated metropolis with Howrah, a bustling industrial district, saw an impressive turnout of over 70,000 commuters on its first day of commercial operation, commencing precisely at 7 am on March 10.
Jindal Stainless supplied stainless steel for India’s maiden underwater metro line in Kolkata, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 6. The project, valued at Rs 4,965 crore, features an underwater stretch spanning 4.8 kilometers beneath the river Hooghly, connecting Esplanade to Howrah Maidan on the Green Line. This segment forms part of the broader East-West Metro corridor, linking Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, a key IT hub in West Bengal.
Utilizing SS 301LN, a premium austenitic stainless steel grade, Jindal supplied various components for the Kolkata Metro, emphasizing its sustainable versatility and suitability for diverse applications. Its corrosion resistance ensures minimal maintenance, making it a cost-effective solution over its lifecycle.
Howrah will house the country’s deepest metro station, situated 33 meters below ground level. The underwater tunnel constructed for this metro line extends 32 meters below the water level, showcasing the engineering marvel achieved in its construction.
