Gadchiroli Considered for ArcelorMittal’s Maharashtra Green Steel Plant

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has proposed Gadchiroli as a potential site for ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel’s planned INR 40,000 Crore green steel plant in Maharashtra. Discussions between the company and the state government are ongoing to finalize the project’s location, originally considered to be in Ratnagiri district.

The green steel plant, with a planned generation capacity of 6 MTPA (million tonnes per annum), is expected to create around 20,000 direct and indirect job opportunities. ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Government for the project. This initiative aims to produce green steel using hydrogen instead of coal, thereby reducing carbon emissions.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister highlighted that the state government has entered into MoUs with seven major companies, totalling an estimated INR 2.70 Crore investment, for green hydrogen projects. With a combined capacity of 910 KTPA (kilo tonnes per annum), these projects are projected to generate approximately 64,000 job opportunities.
