Uttarakhand achieved a significant milestone in its aviation infrastructure with the virtual inauguration of the new terminal building at Dehradun Airport by Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, alongside Chief Minister Puskar Singh Dhami. During the event, Scindia emphasized the strategic planning that went into the terminal’s construction, highlighting its phased approach to ensure uninterrupted airport operations.
Scindia explained that the construction of the new terminal building was carefully planned in two phases to ensure smooth operations. The initial phase, covering 28,729 square meters, was followed by the second phase encompassing 14,047 square meters, resulting in a total area of 42,776 square meters. This strategic approach has increased the terminal’s overall capacity tenfold, effectively accommodating a significantly larger number of passengers and flights.
Dehradun Airport, spread across 326.42 acres, plays a crucial role in Uttarakhand’s tourism sector, annually serving 10 lakh passengers. Positioned conveniently near Rishikesh and Haridwar, the airport serves as the air gateway to Garhwal, blending modernity with the region’s natural beauty.
The new terminal’s architectural design reflects a harmonious fusion of tradition and modernity, drawing inspiration from local heritage and environmental ethos. The canopy-supporting columns, reminiscent of Buddhist prayer wheels, convey a sense of tranquillity and spirituality. Columns resembling the Brahma kamal, Uttarakhand’s state flower, contribute to sustainability by harnessing natural light.
Designed with inclusivity in mind, the terminal ensures accessibility for all, featuring ramps, lifts, and specially designed restrooms for Divyangjans. Key features of the new terminal include:
– Capacity to serve 3,240 passengers during peak hours and 47 lakh annually.
– 48 check-in counters, 4 conveyor belts, and 12 baggage X-ray machines.
– Parking facility for 500 cars.
– Project cost estimated at Rs. 486 crore.
