Tata Steel reported crude steel production of 5.26 million tonnes (Mt) in India for the first quarter of FY26, reflecting a stable performance despite operational constraints. However, the company’s finished goods output and delivery volumes were temporarily affected due to scheduled maintenance shutdowns at key facilities, including its flagship Jamshedpur plant and Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd (NINL).
At the Jamshedpur unit, Tata Steel undertook a major relining of its G Blast Furnace-part of its long-term operational efficiency and safety roadmap. This planned relining, which began during the quarter, temporarily reduced output from one of the plant’s core production units. Simultaneously, maintenance activities were also conducted at the NINL facility, further impacting the finished product volumes during the period.
Despite the short-term disruption, Tata Steel has confirmed that operations are now back online. The G Blast Furnace relining is progressing on schedule and is expected to be fully completed by the end of July 2025. Company officials emphasised that these proactive infrastructure upgrades are essential to ensure long-term asset reliability and to support future production growth.
The company remains optimistic about recovery in upcoming quarters, with the resumption of normal operations expected to stabilise output and improve deliveries. Analysts noted that such planned maintenance activities, while temporarily affecting numbers, are a strategic necessity for companies managing aging assets.
The production update underscores Tata Steel’s focus on operational resilience and its commitment to maintaining high safety and efficiency standards, even at the cost of short-term output sacrifices.
