The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has announced plans to set up a solar power plant in Sabarimala, collaborating with Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), renowned for being the first fully solar-powered airport in the world. A recent meeting between TDB authorities and CIAL Managing Director S Suhas at Sannidhanam marked the preliminary discussions for the project.
TDB president P S Prasanth shared that CIAL is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) and providing technical expertise for the initiative. The solar plant is expected to significantly reduce the Rs 150 million annual electricity costs incurred by TDB in the Sabarimala pilgrimage area, which is currently powered by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).
CIAL, known for its commitment to sustainability, has offered consultancy services without fees as part of its social responsibility. Suhas indicated that the consultancy process would be completed within two months.
CIAL’s experience with solar energy began in 2013 with a 100kWp pilot project. By 2015, it became the world’s first fully solar-powered airport, with a 13.1MWp capacity that has since grown to 50MWp. This expertise is expected to aid TDB in implementing an efficient and eco-friendly energy solution for Sabarimala.
