The Ministry of Railways is advancing infrastructure modernisation in the Northeast under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), aimed at transforming stations into passenger-friendly, future-ready transit hubs.
Implemented by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the scheme follows a phased redevelopment model based on detailed master plans for each station. Works focus on strengthening core infrastructure while upgrading passenger amenities.
Key interventions include redesigned station access and circulating areas, modern waiting halls and toilets, installation of lifts and escalators, improved façades, landscaping, enhanced cleanliness systems, free Wi-Fi, advanced passenger information systems, Executive Lounges and dedicated business spaces. The initiative also integrates economic components such as ‘One Station One Product’ kiosks to promote local entrepreneurship.
A total of 92 stations have been identified for redevelopment in the NFR zone, including 60 across the Northeast – 50 in Assam and the remainder spread across Tripura, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland. Assam remains the largest beneficiary.
Haibargaon became Assam’s first completed ABSS station in May 2025, setting benchmarks in design and passenger infrastructure. Across divisions, major stations such as Fakiragram (88% progress), Majbat (98%), Viswanath Chariali (97%) and Chaparmukh (85%) are nearing completion.
The scheme marks a significant step in strengthening railway infrastructure capacity, enhancing connectivity and creating socio-economic growth nodes across the Northeast.
