₹8,307 Crore Ring Road to Propel Bhubaneswar New City Development

The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the ₹8,307 crore Capital Region Ring Road project, a 111-kilometre greenfield corridor designed to connect Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Dhenkanal, Choudwar and Banki. This ambitious infrastructure investment is expected to significantly accelerate the Bhubaneswar New City initiative, a modern urban development plan aimed at creating a sustainable, inclusive and well-connected township.

The New City project is envisioned to accommodate nearly 200,000 residents, incorporating planned residential clusters, commercial hubs and green zones, supported by modern civic infrastructure. The new ring road will act as a critical transport backbone, easing traffic congestion in the existing urban core while enabling seamless connectivity for new industrial and residential areas.

The development is part of a broader growth strategy in Odisha that emphasises industrialisation and sustainable urban expansion. A key element of this plan is a proposed ₹50,000 crore integrated steel plant in Keonjhar, to be developed by Posco-JSW. Once operational, the facility is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities while strengthening Odisha’s position as a major steel-producing hub in India.

In addition to steel, the state has also attracted substantial investment in high-technology industries. A proposed ₹4,009 crore semiconductor manufacturing unit forms part of Odisha’s vision to diversify its industrial base beyond traditional sectors, positioning the state as a competitive destination for advanced manufacturing.

Officials note that the combination of world-class infrastructure, large-scale industrial projects and sustainable urban planning will reshape the economic and social landscape of the region. With the ring road serving as a catalyst, Bhubaneswar New City is expected to become a model for planned urban growth in India.
