Steel Industry Leaders Launch Pre-Feasibility Studies for Carbon Capture in Asia

A consortium of leading Indian and global steel producers has initiated pre-feasibility studies aimed at establishing Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) hubs across Asia. The group includes ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, JSW Steel, Hyundai Steel, as well as energy and technology giants BHP, Chevron, and Mitsui & Co.

The project marks the first industry-led CCUS initiative of its kind in the region, reflecting a growing urgency to address emissions in hard-to-decarbonise sectors such as steel manufacturing. CCUS technology captures carbon dioxide emissions from industrial processes and either reuses them in various applications or stores them securely underground, preventing their release into the atmosphere.

By targeting the steel sector, which is among the largest industrial emitters of greenhouse gases, the initiative aims to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable production methods. The consortium’s studies will focus on identifying suitable locations for CCUS hubs, assessing the technical feasibility of integrating capture technologies into existing steel production lines, and evaluating potential infrastructure for transporting and storing captured carbon.

In addition to environmental benefits, the project is expected to drive innovation and create new business opportunities across the steel value chain. Successful deployment of CCUS could also enhance the competitiveness of participating companies in an era where low-carbon products are increasingly favoured by global markets.

Industry experts note that collaborative efforts like this are essential, as no single company or nation can bear the technological and financial burden of large-scale carbon capture alone. The involvement of both steel manufacturers and energy sector players is seen as a strategic advantage, combining sector-specific expertise with advanced carbon management capabilities.
