SAIL and Industry Leaders Discuss Vision for Steel Sector Transformation

A high-level summit convened in Mumbai brought together key stakeholders from India’s steel industry, including top executives from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and major engineering firms, to chart a forward-looking strategy for transforming the sector. Led by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, the meeting focused on aligning the steel industry’s growth trajectory with national priorities such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.

The discussion emphasised the urgent need for modernisation across the value chain, with a strong push towards adopting advanced technologies, digital tools, and automation to enhance productivity and global competitiveness. Minister Goyal urged industry leaders to invest in future-ready infrastructure and embrace innovation to position Indian steelmakers as leaders in the global market.

One of the central themes was the integration and empowerment of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the steel ecosystem. The summit acknowledged that MSMEs play a crucial role in the supply chain and must be equipped with better access to capital, skilling initiatives, and digital platforms. Enhancing their capabilities is seen as essential to ensuring resilient and inclusive sectoral growth.

Participants also discussed the challenges posed by evolving global trade dynamics, including the potential risks of overcapacity, unfair trade practices, and supply chain disruptions. The need for coordinated policy support, quality benchmarking, and environmental compliance was stressed as the industry aims to meet rising domestic demand while maintaining export competitiveness.

SAIL and other leading producers reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively with the government to accelerate the transition to greener, more efficient steelmaking. The summit concluded with a shared vision to make India not just self-reliant but also a hub for high-quality steel exports, driven by sustainable practices and world-class manufacturing standards.
