The construction of Nagpur’s twin cable-stayed railway overbridges (RoBs), estimated at ₹332 crore, has encountered a delay of five months. Originally scheduled for completion by October 2025, the project’s revised deadline is now set for February 2026. These bridges are expected to play a crucial role in easing traffic congestion and enhancing urban mobility in one of the city’s busiest corridors near Ajni.
The cable-stayed design is being used to span major railway lines without disrupting train operations, while also adding a modern architectural element to the city’s infrastructure. Project officials have confirmed that approximately 90 per cent of the steel girder fabrication is already complete. The remaining work involves cable installation, decking, and approach road development.
Sources linked to the project cited logistical hurdles, supply chain delays, and heavy monsoon conditions as key reasons behind the rescheduling. Despite the delay, authorities remain focused on maintaining construction quality and ensuring adherence to safety standards throughout the remaining phases.
Once completed, the RoBs are expected to significantly reduce wait times at railway crossings, decongest arterial roads, and provide smoother transit routes for vehicles, emergency services, and public transport. The bridges are designed to handle high traffic loads and are part of a larger effort to modernise Nagpur’s transport infrastructure in line with smart city objectives.
The project also showcases the increased use of steel-intensive construction methods in urban bridge design, improving both structural strength and longevity. With their strategic location and contemporary engineering, the twin RoBs are anticipated to become a vital link in the city’s east-west traffic flow and a model for future urban transport projects across the region.
