Bokaro Steel Plant Supplies Special-Grade Steel for Indian Navy Vessels

The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a key unit under the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has achieved a significant milestone by supplying DMR 249A special-grade steel for two critical Indian Navy platforms—INS Ajay and INS Nistar. This development marks a notable contribution towards India’s drive for defence indigenisation and self-reliance in strategic sectors.

DMR 249A is a high-strength, low-alloy steel developed for naval applications that demand enhanced structural integrity and resistance to extreme marine conditions. Known for its superior mechanical properties, this special-grade steel plays a pivotal role in improving the overall durability, strength, and stealth characteristics of warships and submarines. The use of such indigenously produced advanced materials reduces dependency on imports and supports the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.

BSL’s successful delivery of this grade of steel reflects the plant’s technological capability and quality assurance systems, making it a trusted supplier for defence-grade materials. The deployment of DMR 249A in INS Ajay and INS Nistar signifies the steel’s suitability for both conventional and strategic vessels. These ships are expected to serve in various operational roles, where performance under pressure and resilience are critical.

This achievement also aligns with the Ministry of Steel’s broader strategy to integrate the domestic steel industry into the defence manufacturing ecosystem. By catering to the Indian Navy’s specific material requirements, BSL is not only contributing to national security but also positioning itself as a key player in the evolving defence infrastructure landscape.

The initiative underscores the growing collaboration between India’s steel and defence sectors and highlights how domestic industrial capabilities are being leveraged to strengthen strategic assets. As more defence projects demand indigenous materials, the role of specialised steel plants like BSL will continue to gain prominence in India’s journey toward self-sufficiency.
