In a strategic move to enhance India’s rail manufacturing ecosystem, the West Bengal government has allotted a 40-acre land parcel in Uttarpara to Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) on a 99-year lease. This allocation is aimed at boosting TRSL’s capabilities in producing Metro coaches and Vande Bharat sleeper trains, reinforcing India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative in the transportation sector.
The upcoming facility will serve as a state-of-the-art hub for the design, production, and testing of modern rail coaches. It is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s rail modernisation efforts, especially in meeting the rising demand for advanced rolling stock in Metro projects and high-speed rail corridors.
Although not a steel manufacturing project, the plant’s operations will depend heavily on steel as a core raw material. Leading steelmakers such as SAIL, Tata Steel, and JSW are expected to supply specialised, high-strength steel products for rail coach fabrication. The development highlights the critical role of the domestic steel industry in supporting India’s transport infrastructure growth.
According to officials, this expansion will enable TRSL to execute large-scale contracts from Indian Railways and Metro rail corporations more efficiently. The new manufacturing base is also expected to generate significant local employment and catalyse development in related sectors such as metal fabrication, component supply, and logistics.
This development positions West Bengal as a vital node in India’s evolving rail network. It also underscores the synergy between the steel and rail industries in achieving infrastructure targets through indigenously manufactured, high-performance products.
