Jindal Stainless, India’s largest stainless-steel manufacturer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Braithwaite & Co. Ltd., a Government of India undertaking, to collaborate on the construction of advanced rail infrastructure using stainless steel. The partnership aims to modernise and upgrade the country’s ageing railway bridges and pedestrian structures with long-lasting, corrosion-resistant solutions.
The collaboration will focus on designing and fabricating key structures such as footover-bridges (FOBs), road-over-bridges (ROBs), skywalks, and railway bridges. These will be constructed using high-grade stainless steel—known for its superior strength, low maintenance, and resistance to corrosion—especially critical in coastal and high-humidity regions.
India’s railway infrastructure has long grappled with issues related to corrosion and material fatigue, leading to frequent repairs and safety concerns. This partnership is poised to address those challenges by deploying stainless steel structures that offer enhanced durability and significantly lower lifecycle costs compared to conventional materials.
Executives from both companies emphasised that this initiative aligns with the government’s push for sustainable and resilient infrastructure under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision. The MoU also supports Indian Railways’ broader goals of safety, modernisation, and the use of indigenously produced materials.
Industry observers see this move as a landmark in India’s transition toward more sustainable construction practices. By integrating stainless steel into mainstream rail infrastructure, the initiative not only boosts domestic steel demand but also reinforces India’s capacity for world-class public infrastructure.
