AM/NS India to Expand Downstream Steel Capacity by 51% to Meet Automotive and Appliance Demand

In a strategic move aimed at strengthening its position in India’s value-added steel segment, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has announced a significant expansion of its downstream steel production capacity. The company plans to increase its downstream output by more than 51 per cent, raising the capacity to 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by the end of 2025.

According to AM/NS India CEO Dilip Oommen, the expansion comes in response to rising domestic demand from the automotive and white goods sectors. “Our downstream products are crucial for sectors that demand high-quality steel, such as automobiles and appliances. This expansion will help us cater to that need while also reducing reliance on imports,” Oommen said.

The downstream segment involves processing raw steel into finished products such as coated steel, cold-rolled sheets, and other precision-grade steel components. These are extensively used in manufacturing cars, home appliances, and high-end industrial equipment. By enhancing its capacity, AM/NS India aims to offer a broader range of specialized steel solutions to OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers across the country.

This investment aligns with the company’s broader strategy to deepen its footprint in the Indian market and support the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. It also highlights the growing trend among domestic steelmakers to move up the value chain, focusing more on high-margin, custom-grade products rather than relying solely on bulk commodity steel.

The expansion will involve upgrades across AM/NS India’s existing facilities and the integration of advanced technology to ensure energy efficiency and product consistency. Once completed, the enhanced capacity is expected to substantially improve the company’s ability to meet evolving industry requirements.
