In a major development for Chandigarh’s long-pending infrastructure projects, the Raipur Kalan–Harmilap Nagar Rail Under Bridge (RUB-123) has finally received approval for land acquisition, clearing the way for construction to begin after more than seven years of delays. The underpass, once completed, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and provide safer, more efficient passage across the railway tracks for thousands of daily commuters.
The Punjab government’s approval of land acquisition marks a breakthrough for the long-stalled project, which had been caught in a web of bureaucratic hurdles, funding gaps, and local objections. The delay had become a growing source of frustration for residents of Raipur Kalan, Harmilap Nagar, and surrounding areas, who have been facing prolonged bottlenecks at the existing level crossing, especially during peak hours.
The proposed RUB will serve as a critical infrastructure link, enabling smoother road-to-rail integration and reducing the risk of accidents caused by closed gates and unregulated pedestrian crossings. Local authorities believe the project will also benefit the movement of emergency vehicles and public transport, improving overall connectivity in Chandigarh’s eastern sectors.
The project, jointly undertaken by the municipal corporation and the railway authorities, will now move to the tendering and construction phase. Officials anticipate that once work begins, the RUB could be completed within 18 to 24 months, depending on seasonal and logistical factors.
Urban planners and civic groups have welcomed the decision, viewing it as a long-overdue but essential step toward modernizing Chandigarh’s urban infrastructure and reducing the dependency on manned level crossings.
