Karnataka is set to inaugurate its longest cable‑stayed bridge – spanning 2.14 km over the Sharavathi River in Sagar taluk – next month. The monumental ₹456.67 crore infrastructure project, connecting Holebagilu and Kalasavalli, ranks as India’s second‑longest cable‑stayed bridge.
Constructed amid challenges such as early monsoon disruptions, the bridge recently passed a crucial load test using 100 tonnes of truck weights. Chief Engineer Peer Pasha confirmed that the structure showed a maximum deviation of just 22 mm, well within the permissible 38 mm limit, and returned to its original alignment once the load was removed-affirming its structural integrity.
Upcoming tests, to be conducted next week, will further evaluate the performance of the cable-supported sections under the supervision of senior officials from the National Highways Authority of India and the contracted firm. The construction agency is also mandated to undertake a 10‑year maintenance contract, followed by routine bi‑annual upkeep, ensuring long-term durability.
The bridge is expected to significantly enhance infrastructure connectivity in rural Karnataka, easing vehicular movement and potentially boosting regional economic development. The inauguration – anticipated in July 2025 – will mark a milestone in the state’s infrastructure evolution, showcasing advanced engineering and heightened capacity in steel-intensive bridge construction.
