AM/NS India to Launch Advanced Automotive Steel Lines in Hazira, Boosting Import Substitution

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) is set to commission two state-of-the-art production lines-a Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL) and a Continuous Galvanising and Annealing Line (CGAL)-at its Hazira plant in Gujarat by March 2025. Part of the broader ₹8,500‑crore downstream expansion of its Cold Rolling Mill 2 facility, these lines will manufacture high-strength steels up to 1,180 MPa, both coated and uncoated-marking a first for India.

The CGL line (0.5 MTPA capacity) and CGAL line (1 MTPA) will produce advanced flat steels tailored for the automotive sector, enabling domestic substitution of premium imported steels. According to Ranjan Dhar, Director & VP of Sales & Marketing at AM/NS India, the initiative will effectively eliminate the need for high-end steel imports currently relied upon by manufacturers like Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, and emerging battery/electric vehicle producers.

This expansion aligns with India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” goals and meets growing demand in the automotive steel sector, which currently stands at around 7.8 MTPA and is growing at 6–7 percent annually. AM/NS India currently holds a 13–14 percent share in automotive steel, part of its broader strategy to increase domestic market presence.

The upgraded lines will enable the production of licensed global-standard steels-such as Optigal® and Magnelis®—and support OEMs in meeting global export requirements. Speaking at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, CEO Dilip Oommen emphasised that these additions mark a “significant step toward our goal of providing high-quality, premium steel solutions” while bolstering global competitiveness and reducing import dependency.

Once operational, AM/NS India’s Hazira facility will not only cater to growing domestic demand but also position India as a key exporter of advanced auto-grade steel, reinforcing the nation’s capabilities in high-performance manufacturing.
