NHAI Approves Foot Overbridge at CD Chowk to Enhance Pedestrian Safety

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has granted approval for the construction of a foot overbridge (FOB) at CD Chowk on the Sohna Highway (NH-248A) in Gurgaon. This development aims to improve pedestrian safety along the congested corridor, which experiences significant foot traffic due to the presence of nearby malls, office complexes, and residential areas.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) had been awaiting the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from NHAI, which has now been issued after a review by an independent engineer and recommendations from the concessionaire. The FOB at CD Chowk is part of a broader initiative to construct four such bridges across the city, with a total estimated cost of ₹16 crore. All proposed FOBs will be constructed using stainless steel and equipped with escalators to ensure durability and accessibility.

Construction work has already commenced near the Sector 14 market. However, plans for a FOB near the Sheetla Mata temple faced objections from the temple trust, leading to a potential redesign and relocation of the proposed site. GMDA officials are in discussions with the temple trust and other stakeholders to resolve the issue and proceed with the project.

While the FOB near Raheja Mall was deemed unfeasible due to space limitations, high utility shifting costs, and safety concerns, GMDA remains committed to enhancing pedestrian infrastructure in the city. The overall project is expected to be completed within 18 months, contributing to improved pedestrian safety and urban mobility in Gurgaon.
