The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to complete four steel truss bridges over the Sidhwan Canal on Ludhiana’s Ladhowal Bypass by April 2025. Spanning 17.041 km, these bridges aim to ease traffic congestion in the bustling South City area, which has become a hub for food, recreation, and tourism. Approved in December 2023 for Rs 16.64 crore, the project promises smoother commutes and enhanced road safety.
Fabrication of the steel structures is underway at two facilities—New Life Infra in Kotkapura and Durga Engineering in Yamunanagar. Two bridges are expected to reach the site by early March and become operational in the first week of April, while the remaining two will be completed by the end of April. Each bridge will have a 34-meter span, an 11-meter-wide carriageway, and 1.5-meter-wide footpaths on both sides.
The bridges are strategically located—two in Barewal Awana and two in Ayali Khurd—positioned 300 meters from existing bridges at F2 Raceway and Barewal. This layout ensures minimal disruption to existing traffic while maximizing flow efficiency.
Constructed under the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) model, the project also focuses on improving commuter safety and convenience on the national highways. Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora emphasized the project’s role in decongesting South City and boosting the region’s growing food and tourism sectors.
Sidhwan Canal, a major waterway in Punjab, has been central to Ludhiana’s infrastructure development. Originating from Neelon and flowing through Sahnewal and Harnampura, it crosses Ludhiana’s municipal limits at Lohara Bridge before extending to Isewal village. Efforts to revamp its waterfront with footpaths, canopies, and parking facilities further highlight its importance to the city’s growth.
