The central government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN) has paved the way for the commencement of regular air services from Dumka, Jharkhand’s sub-capital. The state cabinet has approved critical measures to enhance the airport’s operational readiness, including communication, navigation, and surveillance services, as well as air traffic management on a cost recovery basis. A proposal and draft agreement with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have been sanctioned, facilitating swift progress toward operationalizing the airport.

Despite this progress, political debates have emerged, with the BJP questioning the utilization of central funds by the state government. Party spokesperson Amit Mandal has demanded accountability for Rs 1,300 crore allocated under the State Disaster Response Fund since 2019. Meanwhile, under the 15th Finance Commission’s recommendations, the state is set to receive substantial funds for infrastructure development, including Rs 2,370 crore for health and Rs 3,138 crore for disaster management by 2026.

As the term of the 15th Finance Commission nears its end, the central government has urged states to update their data on the designated portal. However, delays in data submission by various state departments have hindered the process, potentially impacting funding and development plans. Dumka Airport’s upcoming launch signifies a positive step toward boosting connectivity and regional development in Jharkhand.
