The NBCC Bhavan has been designed and constructed to serve the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, located in the dynamic city of Ahmedabad. This modern commercial building spans 1,29,000 sq ft across six floors (two basement, ground floor and three upper floors) with each floor covering approximately 16,600 sq ft, providing ample space for various departments and units. The building includes a second-level basement situated 8.3 m below the finished floor level (FFL), while the structure extends to a height of 19 m above FFL, reaching up to the staircase cabin. The facility is equipped with two levels of basement parking, one reception floor, three operational floors, and an accessible terrace level.

Functional and Structural Design
The design accommodates essential functions such as parking, two lifts, washrooms, ministry rooms, courtrooms and waiting areas. It emphasises structural robustness and efficiency, capable of supporting both dead and live loads.

Tata Structura’s rectangular hollow sections (RHS) play a crucial role in the building’s structural framework. Secondary beams (200 x 100 x 6 mm) strategically span necessary distances, effectively transferring loads to primary RHS beams (300 x 200 x 10 mm). These primary beams then distribute the load to I-section columns, maintaining structural stability and ensuring even load distribution across the entire building. The total project tonnage is 1004 MT, with approximately 450 MT of Yst355 grade Tata Structura hollow sections utilised.

Prefabricated Columns and Efficient Assembly
The design ensures the building’s structural stability and strength. The columns, featuring welded brackets on all four sides with lengths ranging from 500 to 600 mm, were prefabricated and assembled on-site with Tata Structura tube sections, significantly expediting the construction process. Additionally, the use of tube sections for floor beams provides a smooth surface, enhancing both the structural integrity and the modern aesthetic of the building.

Optimised Mezzanine Design
Tata Structura tubes of size 300 x 200 x 10 and 200 x 100 x 6 are employed throughout the building. The use of tube sections as main beams and joists in the mezzanine levels optimises clearance beneath, facilitating larger open spaces and improved headroom. This compact, efficient design minimises the need for bulky support structures, resulting in a more open, flexible layout. It also enhances the building’s visual appeal, offering clean lines and smoother surfaces, contributing to both functionality and aesthetics in the space below the mezzanine.

Visual Appeal
By opting for Tata Structura steel beams over traditional RCC beams, the NBCC Bhavan achieves a more spacious, aesthetically pleasing interior. The use of steel allows for smaller beams that can be difficult to achieve by RCC, cleaner lines, and larger open spaces, all of which contribute to a modern, functional, and visually attractive environment. This design choice not only enhances the building’s structural efficiency but also maximizes its aesthetic potential, creating a contemporary, appealing space for the visitors of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

Expedited Construction
Steel elements are fabricated with exceptional precision at Shree Prefab’s manufacturing unit and transported to the construction site, streamlining the construction process and saving valuable time. The use of deck sheets connected to TATA Structura tubes eliminates the need for traditional scaffolding in casting RCC slabs, resulting in substantial reductions in manpower, time, and material costs. Additionally, the erection process is greatly accelerated by utilizing TATA Structura, as it removes the dependency on the bottom structure reaching full strength before progressing further.

Devam Enterprise maintains ongoing collaboration with Tata Structura to ensure the use of premium-quality materials and to facilitate efficient, timely construction. This effort is further supported through collaboration with Shree Prefab, responsible for fabricating and erecting the building, and L.J. Purani, who oversees the architectural and design aspects.

Quote
“Expedited construction by using Tata Structura tubes, combined with innovative and excellent design, is another way to describe the NBCC Bhavan. The idea behind whole project is to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for government and private offices, showcasing innovative design and efficient construction techniques. Its load-bearing structural elements, particularly the floors, are predominantly made using TATA Structura. This innovative approach enabled the building to be constructed rapidly, showcasing efficiency and engineering excellence.”
