Mashup Bar Restaurant and Microbrewery epitomises transparency and openness, both in design and function. Situated on the ground floor of the Nantes Design School, the double-height space, fully glazed on all four sides, transforms an empty commercial property into a lively social hub.
The expansive glazing provides unobstructed views of every process inside, drawing attention to the dynamic interplay between brewing and dining. On the northern side, seven stainless steel beer tanks dominate the space, with four perched dramatically 6 m above the bar counter, showcasing the brewing process as a centrepiece. The southern side is home to the kitchen, bathed in natural light through an aluminium atrium shell with rounded edges.
A continuous, organic ribbon links the production spaces, flowing harmoniously through the interior. This ribbon culminates in a lite earth wall that serves as the backdrop for a gleaming stainless steel bar, where locally brewed beers and food are served, all set against the grandeur of the double-height hall.
The upper floor introduces a warm mezzanine space, accessed by a gracefully curved turquoise steel stairway. This striking feature mirrors the curves of the building’s glazing and adds a dynamic visual element to the interior. The mezzanine’s sloping wooden ceiling offers a cosy contrast to the industrial materials below. From this vantage point, visitors can overlook the vibrant brewery on one side and the inviting main hall on the other, creating an immersive and interactive experience.
Mashup’s design celebrates craftsmanship, sustainability, and community. Exposing its brewing and culinary processes fosters a connection between visitors and the venue’s purpose.
