A new railway terminal in the Perambur area has received approval from Southern Railway’s General Manager, RN Singh, as part of efforts to ease congestion at Chennai Central. The project, estimated at Rs 4.28 billion, is now in the sanctioning process with the MAS division.
Originally proposed for Villivakkam, the terminal was later relocated to Perambur due to the availability of sufficient land. Southern Railway sources confirmed that the terminal will be built in the General Stores depot. Currently, Chennai has two terminals—Central and Egmore—with a third under development at Tambaram.
The new terminal is expected to significantly improve the city’s rail infrastructure by increasing passenger capacity and easing the pressure on existing terminals. It will also enhance connectivity to the northern and western parts of Chennai, providing a more efficient travel experience for commuters and reducing congestion at key stations.
