Andhra Pradesh is poised to host a groundbreaking oil refinery and petrochemical hub in Ramayapatnam, Nellore district, with an investment of Rs 60 trillion. This project, helmed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), fulfills a promise made during the state’s bifurcation in 2014 and provides a political boost to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
BPCL will establish the refinery and hub on a 1,000-acre site, strategically selected after extensive feasibility studies of three proposed locations—Srikakulam, Machilipatnam, and Ramayapatnam. Following a meeting with BPCL’s leadership in July, Ramayapatnam emerged as the most suitable location due to its access to a captive jetty at the Ramayapatnam port. A formal announcement is anticipated by the month’s end, aligning with the foundation stone-laying ceremony for NTPC’s green hydrogen hub at Pudimadaka near Vizag, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited.
This refinery marks a significant achievement for Naidu, whose Telugu Desam Party (TDP) plays a crucial role in supporting the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The project also addresses a key commitment outlined in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, which mandated a greenfield crude oil refinery and petrochemical complex for the state.
The establishment of this refinery underscores Naidu’s strengthened political influence post-general elections and highlights his ability to deliver on long-standing promises. It reflects a pivotal moment for Andhra Pradesh, laying the groundwork for its industrial and economic future.
