Jindal Steel and Power (JSP) has played a crucial role in the development of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II by supplying high-grade rails. JSP provided 9,110 MT of 60E1, 1080 Head Hardened Grade Rails as part of the import substitution initiative, along with 788 MT of UIC 60/60E1, R260 Grade Rails, significantly contributing to the infrastructure of this key urban transportation project.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 20.8 km section of the Phase-II project on September 16, 2024, further expanding the metro network in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar region. This new section connects Motera Stadium to Gandhinagar Sector-1, with a spur line to GNLU and GIFT City.
The Ahmedabad Metro Phase-II project, approved by the Indian government in 2019, has an estimated cost of Rs. 5,384.17 crore. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Modi on March 4, 2019. Phase-II primarily extends Line-2 (Red Line) from Motera Station to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.
Construction for the 28.25 km project began in February 2021 after a successful bidding process in 2020. The inaugurated portion spans 20.8 km, while the remaining 7.45 km is under construction, with the final section expected to be completed by Q1 2026. The current operational routes include:
- Line-2 (Red Line): Motera Stadium to Gandhinagar Sector-1 (15.4 km, 6 stations: GNLU, Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva Circle, Infocity, Sector-1).
- Line-3 (Eastern Spur): GNLU to GIFT City (5.4 km, 3 stations: GNLU, PDPU, GIFT City).
The remaining section of Line-2, from Gandhinagar Sector-1 to Mahatma Mandir (7.45 km), is still under development. This segment will add 14 more stations to the network, further enhancing connectivity in the region. Additionally, a proposed 5 km extension to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has been moved to Phase-III of the metro expansion plans.
Once fully operational, the Ahmedabad Metro Phase-II is expected to significantly improve urban mobility and boost economic activity in both Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
