The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been entrusted with the task of preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for two new metro corridors in Madhya Pradesh, connecting Indore to Ujjain and Pithampur. These corridors span a total estimated distance of 84 kilometres. DMRC will offer technical guidance for developing these metro routes.

The first phase of the project will focus on linking key locations: from Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain and Nanakheda Bus Stand to Lavkush Chauraha in Indore. The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) confirmed DMRC’s involvement in an official letter. This project is part of a broader state government initiative announced ahead of the 2028 Simhastha, a major Hindu gathering held every 12 years in Ujjain.

Construction of the Indore metro began in August 2019, following the approval of a DPR outlining 33.53 km of routes and 29 stations. A successful trial run for the first phase was completed in October 2023, with operations expected to start in August 2024. The entire Indore metro line will feature 11 corridors covering 124 kilometres, with each train comprising six coaches. Currently, work is in progress on a 31 km section of the Indore metro line, and DMRC is set to begin preparing the DPR for the new corridors.

In addition, the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited has been certified by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for incorporating sustainable practices in the metro’s development. Indore metro stations will utilize green energy, including solar power, to operate electronic units. Solar systems will be installed on station rooftops, contributing to Indore’s carbon credits and energy conservation efforts. Consultants will be hired to plan and implement these solar power systems, although no tender has been opened for this phase yet.
