Kolkata, unlike many major cities worldwide, currently lacks a metro station adjacent to its airport. This gap is soon to be filled with the development of the Jai Hind (Airport) station on the Yellow Line, a key addition to this corridor. The new station will provide seamless metro access for both domestic and international passengers, offering a convenient and efficient connection to various parts of the ‘City of Joy,’ ultimately saving time and money while enhancing travel comfort.
The construction of Jai Hind Metro Station is progressing rapidly, bringing to life the long-awaited dream of providing a quick and affordable transit option from the airport to the city center. Structural work on the station and underground yard is complete, with ongoing finishing touches including granite flooring, fire safety measures, and the installation of lifts, escalators, and stairs. Recent progress includes obtaining permission for a working height of 18 meters, which has enabled the start of piling work for the section extending from Jai Hind to Michael Nagar station.
The station will feature modern passenger amenities, including six escalators, six lifts, and six staircases. Two subways will enhance connectivity: one will link Jai Hind station to busy Jessore Road, complete with three public staircases, three emergency staircases, and four entry/exit points, alongside four escalators and two lifts. The second subway will connect Jai Hind station with Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, featuring travelators—the first of their kind in Kolkata Metro—to facilitate smooth passenger movement. Additionally, adequate AFC-PC Gates and advanced fire-fighting equipment will be installed to ensure passenger safety and convenience, including three dedicated Fireman’s Staircases.
