The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has opened a new Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Tetelia station yard for public use. Constructed at a cost of Rs. 72 crores, ROB No. 59A addresses the high traffic congestion caused by the Level Crossing gate ST-22, which previously affected the state PWD road connecting to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. This gate frequently experienced delays due to shunting operations, train movements, and stabling of trains linked to the Tetelia–Byrnihat section and Star Cement siding line.
The new ROB will replace the busy Level Crossing gate ST-22, which had a Traffic Vehicle Units (TVU) count of 88,818. Approval for the closure of the gate, effective from July 10, 2024, has been obtained from the district authority, Government of Assam.
The newly constructed ROB spans 442.58 meters and features a 62-meter Bow String Arch Steel Girder, standing at a height of 16.754 meters and weighing 514 MT. It includes a two-lane road, each lane 7.50 meters wide, connecting NH 37 to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, with viaducts on both sides. For pedestrian safety, two staircases on either side of the Bow String Girder have been provided.
This infrastructure improvement will ease traffic flow during rush hours, prevent trespassing on railway tracks, and enhance operational efficiency, benefiting both train and road traffic. The entire population of Sonapur and Morigaon district is expected to gain from this development.
