The Kordsa tire cord manufacturing facility, situated in South Carolina, USA, stands as a shining example of Salt Design Services’ innovative engineering and structural design expertise within the industrial manufacturing sector. The project presented a unique challenge due to the complex load requirements the structure needed to withstand. While conventional loads like gravity, wind, and seismic forces are standard considerations, this facility had the added complexity of handling significant tension loads inherent to the tire cord manufacturing process. These tension loads necessitated a design approach where specific structural members were primarily designed to resist upward forces.
Salt Design Services tackled this challenge head-on by utilising Idea Statica software. This powerful software played a crucial role in designing robust connections throughout the structure. These connections were specifically engineered to withstand the unique upward forces generated during tire cord production. To further ensure the structural integrity and compliance with safety standards, a client engineer based in the USA conducted a thorough review of the entire structure.
Beyond the structural complexities, the project presented an additional hurdle: the need to deliver results in both metric (IS) units and imperial units. This arose due to the involvement of a German machinery manufacturer. Since the machinery itself was designed and manufactured in millimetres, the German company insisted that all modelling and clash checking be done in metric units. However, for construction purposes in the United States, all outputs needed to be presented in imperial units (feet and inches). This presented a significant challenge in ensuring precision and maintaining compliance with both sets of standards.
The in-house team at Salt Design Services, demonstrating their remarkable skill and resourcefulness, successfully navigated this obstacle by skillfully utilising TEKLA software. This software proved invaluable, as it allowed for seamless switching between metric and imperial units throughout the modelling and clash-checking process. This ensured that the design not only met the functional requirements for tire cord production but also adhered to the construction standards in the United States.
The successful completion of the Kordsa project within a tight schedule serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of Salt Design Services’ entire engineering team. This project represents a significant milestone for the company. It showcases their ability to deliver intricate and demanding projects with exceptional quality and efficiency, even when faced with unique design challenges and the complexities of adhering to dual-unit systems.
“The Kordsa project pushed boundaries by not only handling significant tensile loads, but also by conquering the complexities of a dual-unit measurement system. This innovative approach demonstrates Salt Design Services’ commitment to delivering exceptional results even when faced with multifaceted challenges. The successful completion of the project within a tight schedule is a testament to our team’s dedication and expertise in tackling intricate engineering problems,”
