A major upgrade is on the cards for the busy Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar corridor, as authorities move to widen the Narmada Canal bridge to tackle growing traffic congestion. The plan aims to transform the existing six-lane crossing into a 12-lane corridor by adding two parallel bridges on either side, improving the daily commute for thousands of motorists.
The stretch currently handles nearly 1.5 lakh vehicles each day and serves as a crucial route to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport, making smoother traffic flow a priority. The expansion also complements the under-construction cable-stayed bridge at Bhat Circle, which will seamlessly connect to the canal crossing.
With an estimated cost of ₹37.33 crore, the project will see two new bridges, each around 1,000 metres long and 15 metres wide, built alongside the existing one. Traffic will be divided across structures based on direction, helping reduce bottlenecks.
To execute the work within the canal, engineers will use a pontoon-based method, ensuring strong and stable foundations in a challenging environment.
