Another Boost to India’s Infrastructure: Guwahati’s ‘Mahasetu’ Nears Completion

In a significant addition to India’s infrastructure network, the six-lane ‘Mahasetu’ bridge across the Brahmaputra River in Assam is close to inauguration. The project will link North and South Guwahati and is set to become the country’s longest extradosed bridge.

Built with a projected lifespan of 100 years, the bridge has been designed to withstand seismic activity, as the region falls within a high earthquake zone. A specialised pendulum system has been incorporated to absorb tremors and channel seismic forces downward, enhancing safety and resilience.

An extradosed bridge combines girder and cable-supported engineering, providing greater structural strength while remaining more economical than many conventional bridge designs.

With nearly 99% of construction completed, the landmark project is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month.
