AM/NS India Secures Green Steel Certification Under New Taxonomy

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has become the first integrated steel producer in the country to receive certification under the Ministry of Steel’s newly introduced Green Steel Taxonomy, marking a key milestone in India’s push towards lower-carbon steelmaking.

Under the framework, the company’s hot-rolled coils and sheets have received a four-star rating, while cold-rolled coils and sheets have been awarded three stars. Certification is based on emissions intensity, with products required to emit less than 2.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per tonne of finished steel and graded on a three-to-five star scale.

The assessment was carried out by the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology through a detailed technical and environmental audit. For sectors such as automotive, construction, infrastructure, defence, and consumer durables, the certification offers a credible pathway to reduce Scope 3 emissions using verified green steel.

Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer, said the recognition reflects sustained progress in emissions reduction while maintaining global standards of quality and competitiveness.

AM/NS India’s lower-carbon footprint is closely linked to its production mix, with around 65 per cent of capacity based on natural gas-based direct reduced iron, supported by growing use of renewable power across its operations to drive long-term emissions reduction.
