Construction activity under Hyderabad’s H-CITI project is raising environmental concerns along the stretch from Indo-American Cancer Hospital to Maharaja Agrasen Island, as tree removal and deep-earth excavation accelerate to make way for a proposed steel flyover and underpass. Trees shading two traffic islands near the cancer hospital, long providing relief to patients and commuters, have been among those affected in recent weeks.
GHMC’s Chief Engineer for Maintenance, Sahadev Ratnakar, confirmed that all necessary Forest Department clearances have been obtained, adding that the urban biodiversity wing has prioritised pruning and translocation over outright removal to minimise green loss along the corridor.
The broader H-CITI project envisions a signal-free road network around KBR Park through seven steel flyovers and seven underpasses, targeting chronic congestion at key junctions including Jubilee Hills Check Post, KBR Park Entrance, Film Nagar, and Maharaja Agrasen. Deep excavation works between Telangana Bhavan and Maharaja Agrasen Island are progressing steadily, with heavy machinery deployed to break through the large boulders encountered during earthworks.
