The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, has launched a ₹117.54 crore modernisation of its iconic Bascule Bridge, a vital link within the Kolkata Dock System. Commissioned in 1966 and originally built by Waagner-Biro Bridge Systems AG, the double-leaf rolling bridge plays a central role in facilitating cargo evacuation and road connectivity between Garden Reach–Metiabruz and the rest of the city.
The upgrade will focus on strengthening the bridge’s steel framework and revamping its electro-mechanical systems to improve operational efficiency and reliability. The project is being executed in collaboration with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited and is partially funded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways under the Sagarmala Programme.
Scheduled for completion by May 2027, the initiative is expected to significantly enhance cargo handling capacity and streamline maritime and road traffic flow in eastern India.
