The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a major infrastructure upgrade on the Kanpur – Lucknow National Highway, with five new bridges and allied works planned to improve traffic flow and safety.
The project, for which tenders have been floated, is expected to commence within the next one to two months, according to NHAI Project Director Nakul Verma. The works include flyovers at Nawabganj and Dahitiraha, foot-over bridges at Chamaroli and Tribhuvan Kheda, an underpass at Dahitiraha, and a service road at Asha Khera.
The 800-metre Nawabganj flyover is estimated at ₹60 crore, while the half-kilometre Dahitiraha flyover will cost around ₹45 crore. The two foot-over bridges are pegged at ₹15 crore, and the 300 metre service road at Asha Khera, to be constructed on both sides of the highway, will involve an investment of approximately ₹20 crore.
Carrying 28,000–32,000 vehicles daily, the corridor frequently witnesses congestion and safety concerns. The proposed grade separators and pedestrian infrastructure aim to reduce accident risks, streamline traffic movement and enhance connectivity for nearly six lakh residents across adjoining towns and villages.
The service road and underpass facilities are expected to particularly benefit around 50,000 villagers by enabling safer local access without directly crossing high-speed highway traffic.
