Plans for the initial operational segment of Mumbai Metro Line 2B are being revised, with authorities considering the addition of Chembur Naka station to the already cleared Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch to improve connectivity and ridership.
The five-station section between Mandale and Diamond Garden was earlier inspected and cleared for revenue service by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety. However, the stretch would function largely as a standalone link with limited interchange beyond Mankhurd railway station, prompting a review of its operational scope.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is now evaluating extending the live section by one station to Chembur Naka, which would enable an interchange with the Mumbai Monorail at VN Purav Marg–RC Marg Junction. This is expected to strengthen multimodal integration and raise passenger volumes on both systems.
Metro Line 2B is part of a larger corridor planned with 37 stations and is being executed in phases due to construction delays. The line is supported by the Mandale car depot, built over 30.45 hectares as a two-level facility designed to accommodate up to 72 metro trains, making it one of the largest such depots in Asia.
