The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has revived its long-pending brownfield expansion project, marking a major step towards capacity augmentation and regional development. Tenders have been floated for two key “enabling packages” that will pave the way for the large-scale expansion, BSL Chief of Communication Manikant Dhan confirmed.
The brownfield expansion was formally announced in January 2025 by Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, H.D. Kumaraswamy, during his visit to Bokaro. The project entails an estimated investment of nearly ₹20,000 crore and is expected to provide a significant boost to industrial activity and employment in Bokaro and adjoining areas.
Once completed, the expansion will raise Bokaro Steel Plant’s hot metal production capacity from the current 5.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7.55 MTPA. The revival of the project ends months of uncertainty and signals renewed momentum for SAIL’s flagship steel facility in eastern India.
