Redevelopment of Sonepur railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is progressing steadily, with over 50% of the physical work already completed, railway officials said. The project, with a total outlay of over ₹24 crore, aims to transform the station into a modern, passenger-centric hub with airport-like facilities.
Key works underway include a ₹7.73 crore station façade upgrade, a ₹14 crore foot over bridge and ₹2.68 crore worth of passenger amenities. A 12-metre-wide FOB has been completed and is expected to significantly ease inter-platform movement and reduce congestion during peak periods.
Additional works worth ₹21.43 crore, covering a second station exit, refurbishment of platforms 3, 4 and 5, and improved circulation, have been included in the next phase. Landscaping and painting are in progress, enhancing the station’s visual appeal.
Divisional Railway Manager Amit Saran said Sonepur, the East Central Railway’s divisional headquarters and host of Asia’s famed cattle fair, is being developed as a model station with modern amenities, improved safety and enhanced passenger comfort.
