India has imposed an anti-dumping duty on selected steel imports from Vietnam in an effort to protect its domestic industry from unfair pricing practices. The decision covers specific hot rolled flat steel products that are alloy or non-alloy in nature and are widely used across construction, automotive production and industrial manufacturing. The duty has been fixed at one hundred and twenty-one dollars and fifty-five cents per tonne and will remain in place for a period of five years. Authorities concluded that these products were being exported to India at prices below normal market value, causing injury to local producers who have been facing pressure from lower priced imported material.
The measure aims to restore fair competition within the Indian steel market by ensuring that all suppliers operate within a balanced pricing environment. Domestic manufacturers have repeatedly voiced concern that the inflow of cheaper material from overseas has disrupted demand patterns and weakened their ability to operate at sustainable capacity levels. By introducing the duty, the government seeks to support local mills that have invested significantly in capacity expansion and technological upgrades to meet growing national demand driven by housing, industrial projects and large-scale infrastructure development.
Industry experts state that the decision is expected to stabilise market conditions by reducing the price differential between imported and domestic steel. A more predictable market is viewed as essential for long term planning particularly for sectors that rely heavily on steel as a core input. These include construction machinery production and engineering services which form the backbone of national growth.
The imposition of the duty also highlights wider challenges within the global steel trade where fluctuations in supply availability and pricing often create distortions in domestic markets. By applying corrective action India aims to safeguard the interests of its steel industry while maintaining a balanced and fair-trade environment.
