The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a significant engineering milestone with the successful installation of a 56-metre-long, 450-tonne steel span at the Bhandup-Sonapur junction as part of the Mumbai Metro Line-4 project. This critical section, connecting Wadala, Ghatkopar, Teen Haat Naka (Thane), and Kasar Wadavli, marks a major step forward in the development of Mumbai’s expanding metro network.
The installation involved two massive girders fabricated entirely from high-strength structural steel, reflecting the increasing use of advanced steel solutions in India’s modern urban transport infrastructure. The operation was executed using nine high-capacity cranes, two multi-axle pullers, and a workforce of over one hundred skilled personnel, ensuring precision, safety, and minimal disruption to surrounding traffic.
The Metro Line-4 corridor extends approximately 32 kilometres, with a total estimated cost of about ₹14,549 crore. Once completed, the line will significantly ease congestion in Mumbai’s eastern and central suburbs, providing faster, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable connectivity for daily commuters.
The use of steel in the project highlights its indispensable role in complex infrastructure construction. Steel’s superior strength-to-weight ratio, flexibility, and durability make it ideal for large-span structures such as metro viaducts and bridges. The prefabricated steel components also allow for faster assembly, reducing on-site construction time and improving project efficiency.
