Design With Steel

Introduction: Ravindra Kumar, Principal and Head of Design at Pragrup and Partner at Venkatramanan Associates, brings decades of experience in harnessing the versatility of steel in architecture. He has played a pivotal role in shaping innovative, sustainable projects across India. In this conversation with SSMB, Kumar reflects on steel’s adaptability, the balance between aesthetics and functionality, and the collaborative spirit that transforms ambitious concepts into enduring realities.

How does steel contribute to architectural flexibility and versatility in your projects?

Steel’s ductile and malleable properties allow for immense design freedom. Its adaptability enables precise fabrication, supports both temporary and permanent structures, and empowers architects to explore complex forms and geometries, all while maximising functionality within a building.

“Steel’s adaptability lets us push boundaries of geometry while keeping functionality intact.”

How do you maintain a balance between aesthetics and functionality when designing with steel?

Every steel element has its own inherent beauty, and thoughtful treatment and articulation of these elements, whether in sheeting, framing, or other components can enhance the architectural expression of a building. The aesthetic appeal of a structure is not compromised by steel; when designed carefully, steel can contribute to creating buildings that are both functional and visually striking.

How does using steel in your designs support sustainability and green building practices?

Steel’s greatest advantage lies in its recyclability and reusability. While its extraction and production carry an embedded carbon footprint, the material can be recycled endlessly. This reduces long-term environmental impact and makes steel a responsible choice for creating buildings that are both future-ready and environmentally conscious.

“Despite its carbon footprint, steel’s reusability makes it one of the most sustainable materials we have.”

What are some misconceptions about designing with steel?

Many believe steel is prohibitively expensive, short-lived, or maintenance-heavy. In reality, modern fabrication technologies and smart design approaches have made steel buildings durable, efficient, and cost-effective — dispelling these myths.

What is the most creative or unconventional use of steel you have implemented or admired?

At the HMG Experience Centre, we repurposed steel blades from their granite facility as primary structural elements. The façade, with its subtle transitions and transparency, highlighted how even minimalistic applications of steel can enhance architectural expression.

Project Highlight – HMG Experience Centre

  • Repurposed granite steel blades as structural elements
  • Elegant, minimalist façade with transparency
  • Showcased steel’s potential in adaptive reuse

How do you approach collaboration with engineers and fabricators?

Collaboration is vital. Architects conceptualise, but execution depends on structural engineers, fabricators, fitters, site supervisors, and project managers. Logistics, stability, and erection sequencing are critical. True architectural success lies in seamless teamwork.

Are there advancements in steel technology or fabrication that excite you?

High-density steel elements for bolted structures remain underutilised in India. These systems, especially for logistics and industrial facilities, can make steel construction more accessible, durable, and efficient.

What role do you see steel playing in shaping India’s urban landscape?

Steel’s lightness, transparency, and adaptability make it ideal for flexible, open, and temporary urban structures. It has the potential to redefine how India builds its cities.

What advice would you give to young architects exploring steel?

Treat steel with respect. Recycle, reduce, and reuse wherever possible. Avoid excess; instead, aim for thoughtful, efficient use. When approached with restraint, steel can yield elegant, sustainable outcomes.
