Shipbuilding Cluster Planned at Dugarajapatnam to Boost Maritime Infrastructure

The Union Minister for Shipping and Waterways has announced plans to establish a dedicated shipbuilding cluster at Dugarajapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, in collaboration with the state government. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen India’s maritime infrastructure and promote domestic shipbuilding capabilities under the vision of self-reliant industrial development.

The Detailed Project Report for the proposed cluster is in its final stages, marking a significant step towards creating an integrated ecosystem for ship design, construction, repair, and maintenance. Once operational, the facility is expected to serve both commercial and defence sectors, positioning India as a competitive player in global shipbuilding and marine engineering.

The development will generate substantial demand for structural steel, marine-grade steel, and specialised outfitting materials, thereby providing a boost to India’s steel and allied industries. By localising production and reducing reliance on imported vessels, the project aims to lower costs, enhance operational efficiency, and create a multiplier effect across the manufacturing and logistics sectors.

The Dugarajapatnam shipbuilding cluster is also expected to attract private investment and foster collaboration between public and private stakeholders. The facility will likely support ancillary industries, including component fabrication, precision engineering, and marine equipment manufacturing.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader push to modernise port infrastructure and promote the blue economy. By integrating advanced technologies and sustainable construction practices, the Dugarajapatnam cluster could emerge as a model for green and efficient maritime manufacturing. The project not only underscores India’s ambitions to strengthen its maritime presence but also reinforces its commitment to developing world-class industrial and steel-based infrastructure along its coastline.
