RINL Targets 92.5% Capacity Utilisation as Andhra Pradesh Pushes for Revival

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has reviewed the performance of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), also known as Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, highlighting significant progress in capacity utilisation and outlining ambitious goals for the company’s revival.

According to the review, RINL’s capacity utilisation has shown a remarkable turnaround, improving from around 25 per cent last year to nearly 79 per cent at present. This sharp recovery reflects operational improvements, better raw material management, and enhanced production planning. Building on this momentum, the Chief Minister has set a new target of achieving 92.5 per cent utilisation by the third quarter of the financial year 2025–26.

The renewed focus on RINL’s operational efficiency aligns with the state government’s broader strategy to strengthen industrial growth and support the steel sector’s contribution to regional development. The plant, which has faced financial challenges in recent years, is now benefiting from a substantial equity infusion of ₹11,440 crore aimed at stabilising its operations and expanding production capabilities.

During the review, it was also confirmed that the central government’s earlier plan to divest its stake in RINL has been withdrawn, signalling a firm commitment to its long-term sustainability as a public sector enterprise. This development is expected to restore confidence among the workforce and supply-chain partners, ensuring continued support for ongoing projects.

With renewed political backing, financial support, and an aggressive utilisation roadmap, RINL is poised to re-establish itself as a key contributor to India’s steel output. The focus on maximising efficiency and productivity could also pave the way for the plant’s integration into upcoming infrastructure and industrial development initiatives across the region.
