Jindal Steel Expands Capacity with New 3 MTPA Basic Oxygen Furnace at Angul

Jindal Steel and Power Limited have commissioned a 250-tonne Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) at its Angul facility, marking a significant expansion in the company’s crude steelmaking capacity. The new installation adds three million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to the plant’s output, bringing the company closer to its target of achieving a total capacity of 12 MTPA by the financial year 2026.

The commissioning of the BOF is part of Jindal Steel’s broader strategy to strengthen its production capabilities and meet growing demand for steel across domestic and international markets. The furnace will enable the company to produce high-quality crude steel efficiently, supporting various downstream products used in construction, infrastructure, and industrial applications. The expansion also reflects the company’s commitment to modernising its facilities and adopting advanced technology to enhance productivity and operational efficiency.

The Angul facility, situated in Odisha, has emerged as a key hub in Jindal Steel’s manufacturing network. The addition of the new BOF is expected to optimise the plant’s production cycle, reduce per-unit costs, and improve energy efficiency. These enhancements are likely to bolster the company’s competitiveness in the steel sector, particularly at a time when demand for steel-intensive projects, including urban infrastructure and industrial development, is on the rise.

Industry analysts note that the expansion is poised to contribute significantly to domestic steel supply, mitigating import reliance and supporting India’s infrastructure growth initiatives. With steel playing a pivotal role in bridges, roads, industrial structures, and urban development, increased production capacity at Angul is set to strengthen the company’s ability to meet the evolving needs of the market.

Overall, the commissioning of the new BOF represents a strategic milestone for Jindal Steel, reinforcing its position as a leading player in the Indian steel industry while supporting the country’s broader economic and infrastructure ambitions.
